Connected habitats, wildlife corridors mandatory for reducing man-animal conflict: Dr Suneesh Buxy | KNO

Srinagar, Oct 02 (KNO): Dr Suneesh Buxy, Chief Wildlife Warden, J&K, on Friday said that connected habitats, wildlife corridors and community participation are mandatory for strengthening wildlife conservation and reducing human-wildlife conflict. Addressing the UT-level inaugural function of Wildlife Week 2026 at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), Shalimar, Dr Buxy, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) called for harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife through public awareness, scientific management and collective efforts. He also urged students to become ambassadors of environmental conservation and adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives under Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). The inaugural function, organised by the J&K Wildlife Protection Department, marked the beginning of a week-long programme aimed at promoting wildlife conservation, biodiversity protection and preservation of Jammu and Kashmir’s natural heritage. Dr Buxy said that connected habitats and wildlife corridors are essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems and ensuring the long-term survival of wildlife. SKUAST-K Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai stressed the role of universities in scientific research and conservation, calling for closer collaboration between academic institutions and the Wildlife Protection Department. Prashant Kumar, IFS, Administrative Member, CAT Srinagar, emphasised institutional responsibility and public awareness, while Sh Tawheed Ahmad Deva, IFS, Regional Wildlife Warden, Kashmir, highlighted the region’s rich wildlife diversity and the need for coordinated conservation efforts. Dr Khursheed Ahmad, Professor and Head of the Wildlife Division at SKUAST-K, stressed the importance of scientific research, evidence-based management and capacity building in addressing conservation challenges. During the function, several publications on wildlife conservation and management were released, including the coffee table book Dachigam, standard operating procedures for managing and mitigating human-wildlife conflict, the Asian Waterbird Census, Checklist of Mammals of J&K, Recovery of Kashmir Musk Deer and Dynamics of Man-Animal Conflict. The programme also featured a wildlife documentary screening, a cultural presentation and the inspection of stalls by dignitaries. The department said awareness and outreach activities would be organised throughout Wildlife Week 2026 to engage students, communities and other stakeholders in wildlife protection and habitat conservation—(KNO)
